Germany are the group winners and are sure to advance to the knockout rounds. But there is unpleasant news for the fans at home.

After the second matchday and Ecuador’s mistake against Curaçao (0-0), it is already clear that the German national team as first in Group E into the knockout round of the World Cup will move in. Which opponent are they facing? DFB eleven will meet there is still unclear. In any case, it will be a group third place from groups A, B, C, D or F – but which one still has to be determined on the third and final preliminary round match day. You can read about which teams are eligible as German opponents here.

What is already certain is the date, the venue and the exact kick-off time. And that probably won’t cause much joy at home, at least among the German fans who didn’t travel to the USA. On the contrary: the German team’s game of sixteen in Foxborough (near Boston) will kick off on Monday, June 29th at 10:30 p.m.

After the tournament kick-off at 7 p.m. Central European time against Curaçao and the two games against Ivory Coast and Ecuador, where kick-off was set at 10 p.m., this will be the latest World Cup game for Germany to date. In any case, the final whistle will not fall until after midnight. Plus: In a game in a knockout round, there could of course be extra time and a penalty shootout, so the game could go until 1 a.m. at night.

If Germany advances in the round of 16, they will face perhaps the toughest possible task of the entire tournament in the round of 16: If France wins their group and then prevails in their round of 16, they will face the big title favorites in Philadelphia on July 4th. By the way, the German fans at home would have to hold out even longer for that to happen. The game doesn’t even kick off until 11 p.m. German time.
