Germany investigating ‘mysterious’ leaks in Nord Stream 1 and 2

Within a few hours, three leaks were found in Nord Stream 1 and 2. Reuters news agency according to Nord Stream AG, the operator of the network, Tuesday. There was a huge pressure drop in the pipes on Monday evening, and as a result, an investigation was carried out into possible leaks. The gas pipeline runs from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea. Although the pipes are not currently in use, they do contain gas. Germany is investigating the leaks.

The leaks were found in the Swedish and Danish economic zone. A spokesman for the Swedish Maritime Authority told Reuters news agency that the leaks are very close together. The leaks are located northeast of the Danish island of Bornholm.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung describes the leaks as “mysterious” because the cause is unclear and the leaks are so close together. According to the Tagesspiegel authorities consider targeted attacks as a possible cause. Danish authorities warn for a gas leak in the sea and have issued a navigation ban for ships in the area concerned. According to Nord Stream AG, it is impossible to estimate when operation of the gas network will be restored. The gas pipeline suffered ‘unprecedented damage’ in one day.

The Kremlin responded to the case on Tuesday and said it would not rule out sabotage. “No option can be ruled out at this time,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said.
