Germany investigates political motive for railway sabotage | Abroad

German security services have taken over from the police the investigation into the sabotage of railways in northern Germany. They do not rule out a political motive for destroying important communication cables, German media report.

Due to the sabotage of fiber optic cables for communication, intercity trains could not run for hours on Saturday. Part of the regional train traffic in the north was also shut down. So far, there are no indications of terrorism or involvement from abroad, according to the security services.

According to the popular newspaper Bild, the police nevertheless believe that “sabotage from a state is at least possible”. It has also been suggested that Russia could be behind the sabotage in two different places.

German media reports that the investigators are convinced that there have been professionals who have internal information from the Deutsche Bahn. A possible lead is also that the sabotage was done by an extreme left and violent group. Which has already happened in the past.

Politicians are alarmed at the sabotage and the enormous consequences for train traffic. The social-democratic ruling party SPD, among others, is calling for better protection of the railways and other important infrastructure.
