Germany – Iceland: Liberation for the DFB women

As of: September 26, 2023 8:09 p.m

The German women’s national team played a confident victory against Iceland in the Nations League.

The German women’s national team has ended its recent negative series and celebrated a victory against Iceland in the Nations League. Interim coach Britta Carlson’s team won 4-0 (2-0) against team coach Thorsteinn Halldórsson.

Klara Bühl (19th; 78th), Giulia Gwinn with a penalty (35th) and Lea Schüller (68th) scored the goals for the DFB team.

This means that the German team – even after the 2-0 defeat against Denmark – is still in the fight for participation in the Olympics in Paris 2024. In order to get one of the Olympic tickets, the German team must first win Group 3 and then in Final Four advance to the final. And the unrest surrounding the sick national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg should also be reduced a little.

Initially there is no security

The German women had a lot planned, which became clear right from the start of the game. The players immediately tried to take the initiative. However, it was noticeable to the DFB women that they lacked security in their actions. The many negative experiences of the recent past had left their mark.

Passing, combinations, penetration: all of this had to develop during the game against the strong and robust Icelanders. Despite all efforts, the game initially proceeded quite uneventfully.

Bühl provides relief

After 15 minutes, the German team had their greatest opportunity to date. However, it would have been an own goal because Guðrún Arnardóttir almost headed into his own goal with a save.

Only shortly afterwards there was reason to be happy for the vast majority of the almost 17,000 visitors in the Bochum stadium: Klara Bühl took care of the leadership of the DFB team. The attacker shot low from 16 meters and made it 1-0.

Great superiority

Even though not everything worked afterwards, it was clear to Carlson’s team that the goal gave the players relief and more self-confidence. The Icelanders could hardly get out of their own half; the German team’s superiority was far too great.

Consequently, the DFB women scored their second goal. Giulia Gwinn converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0 after Lena Lattwein was brought down by an Icelander in the penalty area.

More Offensive actions

The German team continued to play offensively in the second half and tried to score additional goals. The Icelandic women concentrated almost exclusively on their defensive work, which made the task for the German women all the more difficult.

Nevertheless, Lea Schüller initially managed to assert herself. After Bühl’s cross from the left side, the midfielder headed in an unstoppable shot from five meters. And Bühl himself was also successful again with a long-range shot, this time from 18 meters, and – despite a few other good opportunities to score – achieved the celebrated final score.

The German women’s next game in Group 3 will take place against Wales on Friday, October 27th, from 5:45 p.m. at the stadium in Sinsheim.
