German tennis aces sovereign in round two

Angelique Kerber survived the first round at Wimbledon without any problems. Another German also mastered his task.

German tennis aces Angelique Kerber and Oscar Otte made it through to the second round in Wimbledon.

Germany’s greatest hope underpinned her ambitions in the first set: Kerber won 6-0 after just 17 minutes against Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic, nine-time Grand Slam winner in doubles and mixed. It took her a little longer to make it 7:5 in the second round, but all in all a solid performance against Mladenovic, who was completely indisposed at times, was enough for her to advance to the second round.

Higher hurdles await Kerber

“In the first set I played well from the first point, in the second Kiki came back and showed her best tennis. I just tried to stay calm,” said Kerber.

On the way to new successes in her favorite Grand Slam, higher hurdles will be waiting – on Wednesday the opponent is called Magda Linette (Poland). But Kerber has proven repeatedly that you can always count on her on grass. In 2018 she won the All England Club title, last year she reached the semi-finals for the fourth time.

Oscar Otte (28) also wants to go there at some point, his steep rise has already led him to the seeding list. Without the injured Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, the man from Cologne is the German number one in Wimbledon – and lived up to this role just before nightfall: Otte outclassed his buddy Peter Gojowczyk in the German duel 6: 1, 6: 2, 6: 1.
