German politician (Green) gives Hitler salute after being stopped by police while under the influence | Abroad

Boden was a district councilor of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, a well-known district in Berlin. There she mainly focused on issues related to education, culture, integration and health.

Early yesterday morning at 1:40 am, officers noticed her car driving on the A115, a highway that connects Berlin to the Berlin Ring. The way the car was swaying across the road made them suspect alcohol was involved and they had the woman stop.

An alcohol test showed that she had 1.34 per mille of alcohol in her blood. For an average woman, that equates to about five standard drinks of alcohol.

Boden had to get out of her car and into a police vehicle. According to the police report, things then got out of hand. She suddenly gave the Hitler salute and shouted “Heil Hitler” twice. Finally she was taken to the police station and blood was taken. She was released at 3.25 am.

When ‘Bild’ asked her for a response afterwards, she initially denied everything. She later admitted that she had indeed driven under the influence. She felt she was not being treated correctly by the officers and when she asked for an explanation, she raised her right arm. It would not have been the intention to give the Hitler salute, she says.

In the meantime, Boden has drawn her conclusions and resigned her political mandate. “Driving under the influence of alcohol and my inappropriate and incorrect response during a police stop were unacceptable. I would like to sincerely apologize for this misconduct. To take responsibility for my actions, I am resigning from my position as a district councilor,” she wrote in an email.
