Daniel Altmaier will face the world number two in the first round in Vienna. Things don’t end well for the German.

At the ATP tournament in Vienna it was over for Daniel Altmaier after the first round. The 27-year-old German had to clearly admit defeat to Jannik Sinner, who was in first place – in less than an hour.

Altmaier lost 0:6, 2:6 against the world number two from South Tyrol. Sinner from Kempen had already lost at the Masters in Shanghai. In Vienna, too, the Italian left no doubts from the start, took serve from Altmaier straight away and won the first set in just 22 minutes without losing the game.

In the second round, when the score was 1:1, Altmaier made a distorted backhand that gave Sinner the next break. Another failed backhand led to 1:4. The match was over after 58 minutes.

Things went better for Alexander Zverev: the world number three is in the round of 16 after his opening victory over Briton Jacob Fearnley. There he will meet Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi on Thursday. The indoor tournament in the Austrian capital is endowed with around 2.7 million euros.
