British para athlete George Peasgood is in critical condition as a result of an accident during training.

The BBC reports that the 27-year-old medalist of the race was injured while training on a bike. Peasgood, who won silver in paratriathlon and bronze in cycling at the Tokyo Summer Games, is currently being treated in the intensive care unit.

Spouse of Peasgood Frankie Hall told more about the tragedy on Instagram.

– Last Saturday, while cycling, George had a violent accident in which no other parties were involved. He suffered severe injuries, particularly diffuse axonal damage. He is currently being treated in the neurosurgery department, Hall writes.

According to Terveykylä diffuse axonal damage is caused by the stretching or twisting of neurons due to the strong acceleration-deceleration movement. The damage typically occurs in traffic accidents or other high-energy events.
