Hockey player Geoff Platt wants to relinquish its citizenship in Belarus. The KHL veteran with ties to Finland does not like the country settling alongside Russia in the war in Ukraine.

Canadian-born Platt, 36, has been a citizen of Belarus since 2012. He has represented the country at numerous World Championships. He played for years in Dynamo Minsk.

In total, Platt has played at KHL for 14 years and has more than 600 matches.

In Finland, Platt played in Ilves in 2008–2009 and in Jokers in 2018–2019. He has a Finnish wife and they spend a lot of time in Finland when KHL is on summer break.

Belarus has strengthened its national team in recent years with numerous foreigners. Being able to play national team games, even then in a non-native country game, was an attractive option for numerous players.

Swedish wafer supplier Karl Månsson says this gimmick is now coming to an end. Many Canadian players in particular now want to give up their Belarusian passport.
