Genesis and Sting are the top earners in 2022

In a new show business ranking, Genesis and Sting earned the most in 2022. The musicians occupy the first two places in the Forbes ranking of the highest paid entertainers. Overall, the top ten earners earned over $1.3 billion last year.

The business magazine listed the ten musicians, filmmakers and celebrities who earned the most in the past year. Genesis tops this list with $230 million. The group sold their lifetime achievements (excluding the work of Peter Gabriel) for $300 million gross of royalties. Tours and earnings from sales of records supplement their income. Sting made a similar deal, selling its music catalogue. He follows in second place with $210 million. Third place is taken by Tyler Perry. The actor-director has grossed $175 million from films, TV shows and his production company’s earnings.

The heads behind the tricks series “South Park”, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, as well as those of the “Simpsons”, James L. Brooks and Matt Groening follow in the next places. Brad Pitt comes sixth in the ranking. He sold much of his production company, Plan B, and is listed at $100 million. The actor is followed closely by the Rolling Stones, who toured Europe last summer, earning an average of $8.5 million a night.

James Cameron took eighth place. “Avatar: The Way Of Water” put $95 million in his wallet. Rounding out the list are Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny. Swift’s $92 million marks her sixth year in the top earners’ rankings – she even ranked number one in 2019. Bad Bunny, tenth on the list, still made $88 million last year.

For the ranking, Forbes refers to the earnings of the artists before they are taxed, minus fees for managers, lawyers, agents and operating costs. The figures are based on data from Nielsen, BookScan and Variety Insight, among others.
