Generous donors save the ancient lime tree Heiloo from destruction

High trees catch a lot of wind and the ancient lime tree on the Kattenberg in the Heilooërbos was not spared by summer storm Poly. A large section of the tree has broken off and the damage appears irreparable, but there is a glimmer of hope now that money has been raised for a rescue operation.

In an attempt to save the monumental giant of about 300 years old, 1,000 euros was collected after a donation campaign. to media partner Regional city Central said forester Mariska Leijten, who works for Natuurmonumenten, the manager of the Heilooërbos. “We have good hopes for it. I am very happy that it is still there. That is another boost when you see what it is all about.”

An important operation was carried out with the money. The tree is partly capped and therefore lighter and more balanced. This prevents the tree from collapsing under its own weight.

Nevertheless, Natuurmonumenten is not yet completely reassured, the damage to the tree remains considerable. Whether the beloved linden has actually been saved remains to be seen.

The day Poly swept across the region was almost two weeks ago. Despite this, the damage caused by the severe storm can still be seen in many places in the region. Municipal green services are still busy clearing fallen trees and broken branches.
