Gas leak at Indian textile factory injures more than 100 workers

A gas leak at an Indian textile factory injured more than 100 workers.

The women suffered from breathing difficulties or nausea, a police spokesman said on Wednesday. After the incident on Tuesday evening in an industrial area in the state of Andhra Pradesh, almost all of them were still in the hospital on Wednesday afternoon (local time).

It was initially unclear why and which gas escaped. The factory manufactures clothing for the international market.

In 1984, one of the worst chemical disasters happened in India. At that time, tons of the highly toxic compound methyl isocyanate escaped from a pesticide factory in Bhopal. According to human rights activists, more than 20,000 people died and hundreds of thousands became ill. (dpa)
