At a water park in Mexico, gunmen killed seven people on Saturday, including a seven-year-old child. The massacre took place in the so-called ‘balneario’ La Palma in the state of Guanajuato, in the center of the country.
The police “arrived on the scene and found, in addition to bullet casings, the bodies of three women, three men and a seven-year-old child. One person was seriously injured,” said a statement from the mayor of Cortazar, where the tragedy took place.
According to the owner of the park, “armed individuals” entered the domain around 4:30 p.m. local time. Local media speak of a group of about twenty men, armed with rifles and other weapons. They immediately targeted a group of people, looted a store and took security cameras, authorities said.
The once prosperous industrial state of Guanajuato is today one of the most violent states in Mexico, due to the gang war between the drug cartels Jalisco Nueva Generación and Santa Rosa de Lima. Last year there were 3,000 murders, the highest murder rate in the country, writes the Spanish-language newspaper El País.
Since December 2006 and the launch of a government campaign to combat drug trafficking, more than 350,000 homicides have been reported in Mexico, according to official data. Most of them are attributed to organized crime.
