The chapter DFB will soon close Sandro Wagner. Where is it next for him? Several Bundesliga clubs could soon be presented with him.
After the Nations League, the end is: Sandro Wagner will turn his back on the German Football Association (DFB) in summer. The association announced this on Friday (read more about this here). The games at the Final Four tournament in June will be the last one in which Wagner will be on the sidelines as assistant coach of chief coach Julian Nagelsmann.
It is not yet clear where the 37-year-old is going. It is clear that Wagner leaves the DFB on its own drive. In the association announcement, he said: “It is no secret that it is my great wish to work as a head coach at some point.” Means: Wagner is no longer satisfied with the assistant job, sooner or later wants to act as a coach again at the forefront – as in Unterhaching. He led the club from the regional league Bayern to the 3rd league in 2023.
After his quite successful time, Wagner should no longer end up in the undermate leagues of German football at the DFB. In the coming weeks, several options for high -class employers could open up for him.
For example, there would be the current German champion Bayer Leverkusen. Start coach Xabi Alonso is actually inviolable with the “Werkelf”. But the BASKE, which still has a contract until 2026, could leave the club this summer – especially when Carlo Ancelotti has to take off at Real Madrid after a mixed year. The “royal” have been the top favorite for the commitment of Alonsos for months, who once laced his shoes for the Spanish top club.
Bayer Managing Director Fernando Carro had emphasized at the beginning of the week how important it was to have clarity in the question of Alonso’s future. “We agree with him that the decision will have to be made in the next three or four weeks,” said Carro. “We can’t wait until the end of the season until we know.”
Alonso is said to have an exit clause in his contract. He could leave Bayer for 12 million euros, it is said. The departure of the double trainer would certainly have to be overcome for Leverkusen, the club should have a promising solution for the vacant position then-which Sandro Wagner with his expertise collected at the DFB would definitely represent.
A Wagner obligation Bayer could possibly also play in the cards. Because: The future of top star Florian Wirtz is still unclear. Finally, the exception of the exceptional cloak was repeatedly linked to that of Xabi Alonso. If Wagner moves to Leverkusen, Wirtz could possibly decide under the Bayer Kreuz for another year without his sponsor. After all, the 21-year-old has worked with Wagner with the national team in the past year and a half. Robert Andrich, who was recently not very noticeable, could benefit from Wagner from the time together at the DFB.
The outgoing DFB-Co coach should also be interesting for other Bundesliga clubs-primarily for RB Leipzig. Just a few weeks ago, the Saxons put Marco Rose in front of the door. Zsolt Lőw is now in charge until the end of the season. But it is not yet clear whether Thomas Tuchel’s former assistant may be active beyond the season in Leipzig.
So it is quite possible that RB dares to advance from Wagner-especially because the ex-striker has worked and learned under Julian Nagelsmann for the past year and a half. As is well known, the national coach was once a coach of the Leipzig (2019 to 2021), shaped a football -successful time of the club. The attempt to sign Nagelsmann’s assistant as a new head coach would be a process that is obvious from the RB side.
