The FC Bayern Munich footballers have made an exclamation mark in the Champions League with a furious comeback.
Coach José Barcala’s team turned around a 0-2 deficit against defending champion Arsenal FC thanks to great morale and won 3-2 (0-2). With their second success in their third game, the Munich team, who are confidently leading the Bundesliga, are on course for the premier class.
Alara Sehitler (67th), Pernille Harder (80th) and Glodis Perla Viggosdottir (86th) turned the game in favor of Munich in a thrilling second half after Emily Fox (5th) and Mariona (23rd) had supposedly made things clear in the early stages.
In their sixth appearance at the Allianz Arena in front of 15,407 spectators, the team around DFB captain Giulia Gwinn impressed, especially after the break – and impressively demonstrated their suitability against a top international team.
The “big stage brings with it a bit of extra tension,” goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs had emphasized the day before, and the team wanted to be supported by the audience: “The urge for action is great, the energy is there.”
Despite constant support, the atmospheric south curve had no significant positive effect on the Bayern women’s game, and Grohs quickly had to take action. After a weak initial phase, the Munich team seemed to stabilize somewhat, but instead of an equalizer, the next cold shower followed.
After the restart, the Munich team stormed towards the opponent’s goal with renewed vigor, but the period of pressure apparently only lasted for a short time. But then Barcala rotated their offensive personnel, joker Alara brought hope back five minutes later – and Bayer actually turned the game around.
