In the summer, the Füchse Berlin celebrated their first German championship. A few months later the trophy is suddenly gone.
Big trouble for the German handball champion: The Füchse Berlin were stolen. This is reported by the “Bild” newspaper. The championship trophy that the team had won in June was stolen. It was the first championship title in the club’s history.
The trophy is said to have been stolen last Tuesday – directly from the Füchse office at Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt. A police spokesman told the newspaper that the theft was reported to the police on November 18th. The spokesman said the investigation would be carried out under the keyword “suspicion of particularly serious theft from a shop”.
Oliver Lücke, head of communications for the Handball Bundesliga, also explained to “Bild”: “We assume that the Füchse Berlin are in possession of the original bowl.” This means: The trophy that was stolen was apparently not a copy. The club had informed them about the theft, said Lücke. “We hope that the bowl will be secured and returned to the German champions.”
According to the report, investigators from the criminal investigation service were already carrying out forensic investigations in the Füchse office on Thursday. However, they are said not to have discovered any signs of break-in.
However, there are hopes that the championship trophy can be recovered quickly. Bob Hanning, managing director of the Berliner, explained: “We have footage of the crime because we have hidden a camera in the room. We hope that everything will be cleared up quickly.” According to “Bild”, the cup is made of 925 sterling silver. According to estimates by the manufacturer, the value of the object, which weighs almost three kilograms, is 12,000 euros.
