From mythical La Bombonera to Wijdewormer: “That’s quite something different”

The contrast could not be greater for nine Jong AZ players. Last week they played for the Intercontinental Cup in Buenos Aires and tonight the meeting with FC Eindhoven awaited. “Of course there is a difference in name, but in the end you want to win them both,” says Dave Kwakman after the goalless draw.

Against Boca Juniors, Dave Kwakman opened the score for AZ Under 20. The Argentinians came alongside in an unfortunate way, after which penalties decided the match in favor of Boca. “It is something you don’t experience often. The name has now become big abroad. I think that AZ was not as big two years ago as it is now.”

Trainer Jan Sierksma looks back on the trip to Argentina almost a week later with mixed feelings. Of course he would have liked to take home the world title, but he believes the unique experience is also worth a lot. “I think we can be very proud of what we have achieved.”

Messages on Insta

After the final, Kwakman noticed that he was receiving more attention on social media. The midfielder receives several messages from complete strangers from Argentina and Spain on Instagram. “They said we are a great club and keep it up. It’s of no use to you, but it’s still fun.”

Next Monday, Jong AZ will play against Jong Ajax at home.
