From football stadium to prison: the materials for the new Roden municipality site come from everywhere

The Noordenveld municipal yard has been completed with the installation of a new, old door. After five years of planning, there is a sustainable building made of recycled materials and the employees of the Noordenveld field service can indulge themselves.

Roof tiles from an old town hall in Dokkum, doors from the stadium of the Cambuur Leeuwarden football club and toilets from a prison: it is all getting a new life in Roden. And in the Noordenveld municipal yard, which was open to the general public on Saturday. The shipyard is ‘circularly built’, which means that materials are reused as much as possible.

It sometimes caused headaches for the contractor, according to municipal councilor Jan Louwes, who was closely involved in the construction. “Then white tiles were drawn up for the toilets, but we instructed the contractor to also use used tiles for that. Ultimately, we were able to arrange residual quantities.”

In this way, the municipality collected all kinds of materials for the new shipyard, which was built by Dijkstra-Draisma from Leeuwarden. The company has experience with circular construction and did so, among others, at It Swettehùs in Leeuwarden (a power station for operating bridges, ed.).

Councilor Kirsten Ipema (Municipal Interests) – dressed in green for the occasion – says that materials now used for the municipal yard can possibly be ‘screwed apart’ later. “Then you can use those materials in another place. That is the core of circular construction.”
