Ramadan is the name of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. In this month, healthy Zoetermeerse Muslims of around 12 years and older fast. From sunrise to sunset, they don’t drink and smoke. So no, no sip of water in between. It is also a moment to reflect on life and to be grateful.

After sunset it is finally time for the iftar: the festive meal that everyone has been looking forward to all day. Delicious!

When will Ramadan start in 2025?

You may have noticed that Ramadan never starts on the same date. This is because the Islamic calendar is based on the moon. The fast month starts as soon as the new moon is visible. As a result, the start date shifts a few days every year.

In 2025, Ramadan will start on the evening of Friday 28 February. So fasting really starts from Saturday 1 March. And the last day of Ramadan? It falls on Saturday, March 29. During this period the sun goes down between 6.20 and 7.10 pm. So it doesn’t take very long before the stomachs can be filled again.
