From Boogie Bar to butter note: a lot of loves blossomed in old disco Barger-Oosterveld

That friend clearly knew what she was talking about, because it was a bull’s eye. “It was Johan, my current husband. It was an immediate hit.” When her father picks her up that evening, she does not immediately dare to tell how old Johan is. “He was 25 years old then. On the drive home, I made him a little younger at first, but gradually he got older in my story,” she says.

Johan therefore first had to ‘come home’ to the Scholten family. He survived that ballot with flying colors, because Johan and Carolien are still together. “Married eleven years already”, Carolien winks.

A similar story applies to Bert and Aletta Mellema from Nieuwleusen, but originally from Emmer-Compascuum and Emmen. “It gave me my life,” Aletta said. But it almost went wrong. “Bert had his eye on someone else first, but got a little blue,” she laughs. “Then he came to see me and we clicked immediately.” The two have been together for 33 years now. “We tied the knot in 1995 and we have two sons.”

Aletta currently works in Zwolle. “I got to know people there who were also familiar with the Boogie Bar. They used to go from Zwolle to Barger-Oosterveld to go out. That says something about how well-known that place was. It was clearly not limited to Emmen and Of course she also regrets that the Boogie Bar has ceased to exist: “The atmosphere, the people, that was something unique. And according to my husband you could eat so well there. My husband always talks about those bacon.”
