A group trip in the French Alps of two Utrecht student associations was cut short after several students were hospitalized. They became seriously ill after the après-ski, presumably from drug use.
After two nights in which groups of students became unwell, the boards of the Utrechtsch Studenten Corps (USC) and the Utrechtsche Vrouwen Studenten Vereeniging (UVSV) decided that the safety of the members could no longer be guaranteed. The first buses left for Utrecht on Thursday evening, the rest will follow on Friday.
Things went wrong in Risoel, where the freshmen went skiing and partying. On Tuesday night, five students became unwell. They suffered from spontaneous slump, violent trembling, alternating laughing and crying, rolling eyes, nausea and vomiting, panic attacks and memory loss. Two of them were in such a serious condition that they had to be taken to hospital.

The group suspects that drugging was involved: secretly mixing drugs in their drinks. The student associations took measures the next day to prevent a recurrence.
But the next night it happened again. Four students became ill, two of which had to be hospitalized.
At night, the boards decided, in consultation with the travel agency, to end the holiday and return to Utrecht. The conclusion was that safety could no longer be guaranteed. Also, the fun of the journey was gone; the events lead to a lot of mistrust towards the guards, bar staff and other holidaymakers, the board wrote in a statement.
The sick students were tested in the hospital for drug use. The results are expected in the coming days. Because there were no incidents among the old-year students in les Deux Alpes, the holiday was not interrupted there.
