French secretary of state resigns after allegations of bullying | Abroad

French Secretary of State Nathalie Elimas resigns. The Elysée announced this on Saturday. Elimas is under internal investigation for bullying.

Elimas, 48, has been State Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports since July 2020.

At the beginning of February, French Prime Minister Jean Castex was presented with an internal report in which the Secretary of State was accused of ‘bullying’ and in some cases even ‘assault’. Sources from the French news agency AFP speak of several “serious and damning” allegations. Five people were said to have been the victims. Castex asked Elimas for an explanation, after which she allegedly refused to resign from the government of her own accord.

The resignation of the Secretary of State is on the proposal of the Prime Minister. The Elysée announced her departure on Saturday at the same time as that of Minister Jacqueline Gourault. She is nominated by President Emmanuel Macron as a judge at the Constitutional Court. Gourault is replaced by Joël Giraud, until her Secretary of State.
