Daniel Altmaier and the French Open – that just seems to go well together. After 2020, the 26-year-old fought himself again in the round of the last 16.
Daniel Altmaier is in his career in the round of 16 of the French Open for the second time. The 26-year-old prevailed in the third round against the Serbs Hamad Mededović in four sets-and benefited from his opponent’s health problems.
At temperatures over 30 degrees, Mededović had to deal with the circulation in the first set. After winning 2-1, the 21-year-old had to take a ten-minute medical break. Again and again he supported the gang. Altmaier was initially irritated, but found his game from the second set and won the game 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2.
After 2:48 hours, Altmaier converted his match ball – and, like in 2020, reached the round of 16 of Paris. At that time the tournament took place because of the pandemic in autumn and without spectators. So far it is his greatest success in a Grand Slam tournament.
In the round of the top 16, the Davis Cup player meets Frances Tiafoe or Sebastian Korda from the USA. In addition to the world ranking third Alexander Zverev, who will compete against the Italian Flavio Cobolli on Saturday, Altmaier is the last remaining German player in singles.
