The sports club determines the game against FC Basel over long distances. A strange gate ensures the preliminary decision. Then it will be exciting again.

First game, first victory for SC Freiburg in the Europa League 2025/26: At the start against FC Basel, the Breisgauer won 2: 1 (1-0) – despite a strong performance, however, had to worry about victory.

Patrick Osterhage had put the hosts in the lead (31st), Maximilian Eggestein increased after the break (56.), was lucky that Basel’s goalkeeper Mirko Salvi only got the ball millimeter behind the goal line. Philip Otele made the game out of nowhere exciting again in the final phase (84th). Nevertheless, it was enough for Freiburg.

After a weak start of the season, the shape curve for the team of coach Julian Schuster continues upwards, slowly the consistency comes. Self -confidence is back before the upcoming tasks against TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday (3:30 p.m.) and on Thursday (6.45 p.m.) at FC Bologna.

The two cities are not even an hour’s drive, for no duel in the leagueapse of this European Cup season, the guest fans have to cover less kilometers. “For me it is a derby because it exists,” said Schuster: “This creates a certain explosiveness and makes it totally exciting and interesting.” The fans challenged their team with a large choreo “Attack” – but the call first followed the Swiss before the eyes of the former national coach Joachim Löw.

After less than 90 seconds, Albian Ajeti came to the header in the penalty area, goalkeeper atubolu parried brilliantly. At the sports club there was a certain initial nervosity, the ball passages looked hectic and faulty. After around a quarter of an hour, Freiburg got more peace and quiet, now dominated without really dangerous offensive actions. Rather out of nowhere, Osterhage hit the corner of the edge of the penalty area after high ball gain.

Shortly before the break, Atubolu prevented the balance in front of 34,700 spectators with a strong reflex against Arlet Junior Zé (45.). After the change, the Breisgauer initially put on the pace, the wages were the header of the Eggstein, which was running in a sharp flank from Vincenzo Grifo. As a result, the Schuster-Elf withdrew, let Basel come-and lurked on counterattack.
