The British multi-instrumentalist and queen drummer Roger Taylor has revealed why Freddie Mercury banned his bandmates during his lifetime to write political queen songs. On the other hand, on his new solo album “Outsider”, which Taylor published last Friday (October 1), things are now a little more political.
In a new interview with “Music Radar“Said Roger Taylor about his new album:” I assume that the big difference between Queen and this album is that I wrote a few ‘political’ songs. ” He further explained: “As a band, we didn’t really do that. It was a conscious decision right from the start-and you have to remember that a lot of hardcore policy happened in the 1970s.”
“I’m not there to send a message”
According to Taylor, Freddie Mercury said in the 1970s: “I don’t want to get involved. I want to travel around the world and play songs that people can enjoy. I am not there to send a message.” Although Taylor now sounds a little more political on his new record, he still supports Mercury’s decision today. Because he too “does not want to be too preaching,” said the 72-year-old.
He also said: “I hope that on the right side of the narrow ridge between rock music and politics. I hope that I will never get to the point where I romp around on stage and talk about what is wrong with the world. Freddie would never forgive me.”
Roger Taylor also said about the creation of “Outsider”: “I don’t get up in the morning and think: ‘I am writing a song by Queen’ or ‘I am writing a song for the new solo album.’ Only when the matter is finished do I start thinking about where a song will land. ” With songs such as “A Kind of Magic” (1986) or “Radio Ga GA” (1984), for example, it was quickly clear that they become queen titles.
