Despite a long majority: Frankfurt is experiencing home claps

Frankfurt played in the majority against Mainz for a long time. But despite this advantage, the Hessians came away empty-handed.
Eintracht Frankfurt suffered a very bitter defeat. In the end it was 1:3 (0:2) against FSV Mainz 05. Right from the start, the Frankfurt team had the problem: In the 15th minute, Ellyes Skhiri was put under pressure in the build-up and played an unsuccessful back pass that sailed in a high arc towards his own goal. Goalkeeper Kauã Santos, who was replacing the sick Kevin Trapp, didn’t want to take the ball into his hand due to the back pass rule – and so the ball ping-ponged between the crossbar and him into the goal.
In the 21st minute, Eintracht’s luck seemed to change. After a serious foul, Mainz’s Nadiem Amiri was shown the red card, meaning Frankfurt played in the majority from then on. But despite Eintracht’s field superiority, the guests scored the next goal: Paul Nebel increased the score to 2-0 in the 27th minute.
Frankfurt came out of the dressing room with anger in their stomachs and immediately missed a top-class player: Can Uzun didn’t hit the ball properly from close range, so that Robin Zentner was able to clear it in the Mainz goal (49th). The 58,000 fans saw one-way street football in the Waldstadion – and, in keeping with this game, the next strange goal for the guests:
After a build-up pass from Santos fell short, the Brazilian initially held off Jae-Sung Lee, but was then powerless against fog (58′). Frankfurt fought bravely and created numerous chances, but it wasn’t enough for anything more than the 1-3 consolation goal from Rasmus Kristensen (75′).
As a result of the defeat, Eintracht is expected to survive the winter in third place in the table, Freiburg would have to win very well against Leverkusen in the evening in order to displace them. With the three points, Mainz jumps to fifth place, at least temporarily.
