Eintracht Frankfurt has lost the final group game in the Europa League. Afterwards there was still reason to cheer for the Hesse.

Despite a 0: 2 defeat (0: 1) at AS Rome, Eintracht Frankfurt has reached the round of 16 of the Europa League and saves its way across the intermediate round. The team of coach Dino Toppmöller ends the group phase in fifth place with 16 points. Rome around world champion and ex-BVB star Mats Hummels has meanwhile achieved the playoffs through the success against the Frankfurters.

In a game one-sided game, ex-Bundesliga professional Angeliño initially scored for the deserved break for the home team (44.). In the second section, Eldor Shomurodov, who had recently substituted, increased to 2-0 (69.).

Frankfurt now meets on March 6th in the round of 16 to the 11th, 12th, 21st or 22nd of the final table – depending on which team is asserted in the intermediate round and the Bundesliga club is drawn. Potential opponents are FCS Bucharest, Ajax Amsterdam, Saint-Gilloise and Paok Saloniki. The second leg will take place on March 13th. Then Eintracht can compete at home.

Compared to the 2: 2 at TSG Hoffenheim at the weekend in the Bundesliga, Toppmöller rotated in three positions: Tuta, Farès Chaibi and Jean-Mattéo Bahoya moved into the starting eleven for Namdi Collins, Mario Götze and Can Uzun. When the two teams encountered, the hosts had the first chance after almost a quarter of an hour. Artem Dowbyk came to a close distance, but put the ball over the goal.

Hugo Larsson failed at the first good conclusion for the guests from a short distance by head (22nd) to Roma keeper Mile Silvar. Eintracht looked unfocused, causing slight mistakes without distress. Rome, who absolutely had to win to stay in the competition, initially lacked precision. Paulo Dybala put a free kick from a promising position over the box (27th), Roberto Mancini extended a corner kick to the post (36.).

Shortly before the break, Angeliño struck. The Spaniard used a flank from Mancini from an acute angle. Afterwards there were unsightly scenes in the ranks. Böller and Bengalos flew back and forth between supporters from Eintracht and Roma. “This violence is just annoying,” said Eintracht sports director Timmo Hardung at RTL+ at half-time.

After both fan camps calmed down in round two, Joker Shomurodov gave the eleven of coach Claudio Ranieri the decisive goal of the game two minutes after his substitution. Frankfurt found hardly any solutions against the team of world champion Mats Hummels and did not act little, but also had to worry about the direct progress with a view to the roles running in parallel.
