Eintracht Frankfurt has ended the Ligapse of the Europa League with a defeat. At AS Rome, the team lost 0: 2 (0: 1) on Thursday. Angeliño (44th minute) and Eldor Shomurodov (69th) met for the home side. For Eintracht, it was still enough for a place in the first eight and is therefore qualified for the round of 16.
Compared to the 2-2 in Hoffenheim, coach Dino Toppmöller brought three new players from the start: Farès Chaibi, Jean-Mattéo Bahoya and Tuta replaced Namdi Collins, Can Uzun and Mario Götze. But the game started leisurely – Eintracht “didn’t” “had to”, the AS Rome was looking for a brilliant idea.
Angeliño stands out and hits
The first big chance initiated Angeliño with a cross, but Artem Dovbyk did not get the ball properly and poked it over the goal from a promising position (13th). On the other hand, the Bahoya busy at the beginning flanked Hugo Larsson, whose header from five meters was steered over the crossbar by Rome keeper Mile Svilar (22nd).
Rome has now been overweight. Gianluca Mancini put a header on the post (36th). Eintracht was able to prevent the deficit for a long time, but in the 44th minute it happened: Mancini used the striking Angeliño, whose direct acceptance landed in the goal over the flipper stations Kevin Trapp and Tuta. Despite the deficit, there was no reason for Eintracht when looking at the table of the league. Started in the last matchday as the second, there was a lot of buffers up to place ninth.
Eintracht without compelling chance, Rome increased
After the break, the Toppmöller team tried more forward, but there were no good chances. On the other hand, it only became dangerous again in the 69th minute – and more than that: Matias Soulé played Arthur Theat and fit into the top. There Shomurodov brought the ball past Tuta and Trapp to 2-0 from the home side’s point of view.
Substitute Can Uzun tried it in the 74th minute from a distance, but his shot rushed over the goal. Otherwise, Eintracht presented itself without ideas in the second round. After all, the 16-year-old EBA Bekir is still allowed to celebrate his competitive game debut.
Play competitors with
The game had long since run in the final phase, so the view went on the other places. There the competitors played for Eintracht – or rather: not all against them. In the end, despite the defeat for the direct round of 16 qualifications.
While 16 other teams have to compete in Playoffs, the Frankfurters in the Europa League will only continue in March. There they meet one of these four teams: FCS Bucharest, Ajax Amsterdam, Union Saint Gilloise or Paok Saloniki.
