On the way home, Marieke saw an animal crossing the road in a flash, followed by a bang. “At first I didn’t see it at all when I got out,” she says DVHN. ,,All I found was a piece of my car. I shined the flashlight on my phone on the bumper to see where that piece came from. Then I was shocked, because suddenly there was an animal under my license plate.”

Marieke, in a panic, called a friend from the neighborhood to get the animal out together. “In my mind he was already dead.” That friend went to investigate. “He shines his flashlight on the bumper and then looks at me. ‘It’s a fox, it’s still alive. He’s looking at me,” he says to me. Then we called the animal ambulance. That animal was of course scared and might bite.”

The fox escaped unscathed. “The emergency services had never experienced this before. That an animal is completely intact after being hit. (…) At about one o’clock the animal ambulance called me to say that the fox had not broken anything or was seriously injured. So he would survive. I think he will be back in the wild next week.”
