VfL Wolfsburg shows a strong comeback in the second half against RB Leipzig, but cannot stop the descent in the Bundesliga.
Lois Openda (11th minute) and Xavi Simons with two goals (26th, 49th) shot an apparently calming 3-0 lead for the guests. But Wolfsburg came back through Kilian Fischer (58th) and Andreas Skov Olsen (75th), but in the end the fourth defeat was 2: 3 in a row.
The Wolfsburgers were noticed by the tension according to the series of defeats. Patrick Wimmer twisted the ball on his own penalty area, openda quickly switched and got the lead with a though shot into the corner.
Wolfsburg tried to find a way into this game. However, it took more than 20 minutes until the first dangerous scoring approach: Maximilian Arnold’s flank landed at Bence Dardai, who hit the post by head.
Wolfsburg susceptible, Leipzig ice cold
But VfL remained extremely susceptible to the backward movement. Before the second goal, Maximilian Arnold slipped away in midfield – the ball loss again: Simons was able to take a speed, lay the rest of the Wolfsburg defense and gave keeper Kamil Grabara no chance with a placed shot in the left corner.
Wolfsburg after less than half an hour with his back to the wall, but the hosts continued to try. Jakub Kamiński had the connection on the foot shortly before the break, but put the ball from eleven meters to the crossbar – the second aluminum hit by Wolfsburg, Leipzig now also in luck.
Simons with double pack, Wolfsburg starts comeback
Shortly after the restart, the battered Wolfsburgers got the next deep blow. Once again, the Leipzigers were able to combine far too easily to the sixteen, Ridle Baku used Simons, whose shot was deflected by David Odogu and struck in the corner.
Leipzig switched to administration mode, but probably a little early: Fischer put a Schlenzer from more than 20 meters into the corner – the first goal of the season and Wolfsburg’s start.
The wolves with new courage – and even more risk. Leipzig’s keeper Peter Gulasci steered the shot from Mohamed Amoura (70th) with a brilliant act over the crossbar. Five minutes later, Skov Olsen completed a nice combination on pass from Joakim Maehle – the game was suddenly really exciting.
Yannick Gerhardt could have completed the comeback of the “wolves” eight minutes before the end – but again Gulasci stood in the way, fought off the shot with a brilliant act.
