A motorist hit four sheep that had broken free on Sunday around midnight on Westeinde in Waalwijk. They were walking on the road there. After the collision, the driver continued driving.
One sheep died immediately after the collision, the three others were seriously injured. Because no veterinarian was available, the police decided to put the animals out of their misery.
The fire brigade also came to Westeinde and retrieved a sheep from the ditch in which it had ended up. The surviving sheep were then brought together. The fire brigade investigated how the sheep could have escaped, so that they could be prevented from running onto the road again.
The police are investigating who owns the sheep and is trying to determine who the hit-and-run driver is. The car probably suffered significant damage in the collision.
