Four homes uninhabitable after Amsterdam-West fire: “I thought: I have to get out of here”

Due to last night’s house fire on Marco Polostraat in West, four houses are probably uninhabitable for a longer period of time. During the major fire, which broke out on a balcony at the rear of the porch house, twenty homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The house fire started on the second floor around 7 p.m. yesterday. Then it quickly spread to the third floor. A number of neighboring buildings also caught fire through the roof of the upper house. At around 9 p.m., the fire service reported that the fire was under control. Firefighters have been busy putting out the fires for some time.

Some of the local residents were able to return to their own home during the night. A total of eight homes were uninhabitable last night, partly due to water damage from extinguishing activities. Today it turned out that four houses are probably uninhabitable for a long time.

A day after the fire, many local residents are still very frightened. A local resident whose house was evacuated last night says: “There was panic among everyone. The fire brigade also did a great job and was there very quickly.”

The firefighters were able to get on the roof via the house of the neighbor to extinguish the fire. Moments later, she had to leave her home as a precaution. “I couldn’t think clearly anymore. What are you taking with you? I just thought: I have to get out of here.”

“Everyone was panicking”

RESIDENTIAL FIRE MARCO POLOSTRAAT

Emergency services stayed longer to keep an eye on the homes. The local residents were pleased with that: “All we saw all evening were flashlights and quite heroic firefighters at work. We even pointed and yelled where they had to go. They were busy until late at night. to remove parts to see if it was still on fire,” says one resident.

The house fire is still the talk of the town in the area. “People come by and talk to each other. Yesterday we got to know all the neighbors quite well, because everyone came together. That was nice.”
