Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rouwen Hennings will part ways at the end of the season. The veteran’s expiring contract will not be extended, as the second division club announced on Friday. The 35-year-old forward, who is Fortuna’s top scorer in the top two divisions with 72 goals, will continue his playing career at another club before returning after retiring. Hennings will then take a place on the coaching staff of the youth academy. This has already been contractually agreed.

“Rouwen won the hearts of the fans and did a great job for Fortuna. Not renewing his contract was anything but easy for us, but we have to set the sporting course for the future. It was particularly important to us to have such a role model as Rouwen Hennings back with us after continuing his career. We are already looking forward to working together,” said Klaus Allofs, Board Member for Sport and Communication.
Hennings, who contributed six goals and three assists in 27 games this season, explained: “It was my wish to continue playing for Fortuna and then end my career here. Unfortunately, that is not possible for me now. I still feel strong enough and now I want to prove that elsewhere. I’m proud to look back on a very nice time in Düsseldorf and I’d like to thank all the fans who showed me their great affection and supported me. Fortuna means a lot to me, so I’m happy to have the opportunity to come back here later.” In total, Hennings has donned the F95 jersey 227 times so far, scoring 84 goals.
