The Italian Leonardo Fornaroli has secured the Formula 2 championship title ahead of schedule.
In the main race in Qatar, the 20-year-old from the Invicta Racing team took second place on Sunday and thus secured the title. He can no longer be intercepted at the season finale next weekend in Abu Dhabi. Fornaroli had won Formula 3 the previous year, and now he achieved this feat in the next higher class.
Fornaroli has already been associated with Formula 1 on several occasions; the Italian is characterized by a consistently fast and at the same time calm driving style. He won the Formula 3 championship without a race win, and in Formula 2 he scored strongly, especially in the second half of the season.
The Frenchman Victor Martins (ART) took victory in Lusail ahead of Fornaroli and the Irishman Alex Dunne (Rodin). The German-Danish Oliver Goethe retired early due to a technical defect.
