Munich (AP) – Sebastian Vettel makes his future in Formula 1 dependent on the progress of his Aston Martin team.

“The truth is that the next races, the next few weeks and months will determine how things will continue. At the last race in Imola, it rained and washed us somewhere up front and we were able to benefit from that,” said the four-time world champion of the ARD “Sportschau” in an interview. “It won’t be the case every weekend and I think our ‘normal’ is towards the end of the field. It’s tough because that’s not my approach and it’s not my goal.”

Vettel (34) last scored the first points for Aston Martin this year in eighth place at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola. “Of course it has to be clear that things are going in the right direction. It should be noticeable that the car is improving and that I can also see that the team is making progress,” said Vettel. “Formula 1 is what I’ve been doing in a way for the past few years and my whole life. But there are other things too.”

After leaving Ferrari, Vettel is driving for the English factory team Aston Martin in his second season. The Hessian had his most successful time at Red Bull, where he became world champion four times. His contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of this year.
