Formula 1 pilot Carlos Sainz came up with a curious punishment last weekend at the Japan Grand Prix. However, the Spaniard takes the FIA’s judgment with humor.
In Formula 1, there is a strict protocol on every race weekend that all drivers have to adhere to. Minutively is clocked when the pilots have to appear where.
When Carlos Sainz appeared too late to the hymn at the Japan Grand Prix on Sunday, he promptly acted trouble with the FIA. His delay had biological reasons, because Saint suffered in Suzuka from gastrointestinal problems.
Not an acceptable apology for the control keepers. They imposed a fine of 20,000 euros, half of which was exposed to probation.
Next punishment for Carlos Sainz?
“Shit Happens”, the Williams driver joked in Bahrain about the verdict against him. Nevertheless, he called the punishment “disappointing” because he was only 5 seconds too late and was absolutely insightful.
“I am the greatest supporter of punctuality. I am a gentleman and being on time is very important to me, especially for a national anthem with all the important representatives. So I was the first to raise and say: I’m late. I am sorry,” said Sainz.
The stewards even showed insight, because according to the regulations, a punishment of up to 60,000 euros would have been conceivable.
Sainz initially only has to pay 10,000 euros, provided that he will not be conspicuous again in the next 12 months. He now hopes that his penalty payment will be used at least “for a good cause”.
Curious: His statement at the press conference in Bahrain could possibly mean trouble for Sainz. Because the FIA is now also picking up when using swear words.
