“A steering wheel in hand for 40 years”-but Fernando Alonso does not yet see the end of his Formula 1 career.
“You have to feel when it’s time to go,” said the Spaniard before his home Grand Prix in Barcelona (3 p.m., live at RTL)“And I don’t feel that yet.”
Alonso, two world champion, is currently walking through a remarkable valley in his career with Aston Martin. After eight races he is still without a single World Cup point, such a series had only existed for him in his 2001 debut season with Minardi and in the very weak year 2015 at McLaren.
He is currently “happy when I get into the car,” said the 43-year-old, “and I am motivated for the next after a bad race. All of this is very lively, but of course there is no guarantee that it stays that way forever.”
At the age of three he started with motorsport, “I have had a steering wheel in my hand for 40 years. I know that I have to stop at some point. The stopwatch will tell me when it is time.”
Aston Martin hopes for upgrades
Aston Martin, who has already played 14 points for teammates Lance Stroll in 2025, had built promising upgrades at the penultimate race in Imola. In Barcelona, the team is now hoping for further knowledge of progress, “but we know that this year is only about small improvements. The big step can only happen in 2026. All hopes are.”
For the coming season, a completely new regulations will take place, with the new car, the racing team hopes to finally get closer to the ambitious goals. The Aston-Martin-Bolide for 2026 will also be the first to have a decisive contribution to Adrian Newey. The Red Bull racing team had eliminated the star designer.
Aston Martin then wants to drive for podium places and victories. And the strength of the new car will also play “a very important role” with a view to the continuation of his career, said Alonso.
