Things didn’t go so well for Mercedes. George Russell inherited fourth place from championship leader Kimi Antonelli because he left the track too often and received a five-second time penalty. The Italian fell back to sixth place.

Red Bull star Max Verstappen moved up to fifth place, record world champion Lewis Hamilton was in seventh place in the second Ferrari.

Next disappointment for Hülkenberg

McLaren thus underlined its own upward trend; the numerous updates seem to work very well in combination with the new adjustments to the regulations.

For Nico Hülkenberg the race was over before the start. On the way to the starting grid, smoke initially rose from the rear of his car. When flames even formed, Hülkenberg stopped his car and got out of the cockpit. “We already had problems in the box”said Audi’s new racing director Allan McNish on “Sky”. The Briton did not provide any further details about the problems.

For Hülkenberg, his debut season with Audi isn’t going according to plan at all; after three races he still doesn’t have a championship point to his name. The difficulties before the start of the race are a recurring problem for the German racing team.
