Danger of severe weather in Florida
Formula 1 makes decision on Miami races

There have been repeated rumors that Formula 1 is reacting to the bad weather forecast in Miami. Now she’s doing it.
The Miami Grand Prix will take place on Sunday three hours earlier than planned. Formula 1 has brought forward the start to 1:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. CEST) because thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in the afternoon – and driving is not allowed if there is lightning near the track.
The international automobile governing body (Fia) justified the decision in a statement: “This decision was made to minimize disruptions during the race and to ensure the largest possible time window for a successful conclusion of the Grand Prix under optimal conditions.” The organizers added: “The safety of the drivers, fans, teams and employees has top priority.” A US law requires the immediate interruption of all outdoor events and the accommodation of spectators and staff in the event of thunderstorms and the risk of lightning.
Rain in Miami had already delayed the start of the sprint last year. Before the weekend, Formula 1 had also introduced several changes to the regulations for wet conditions. The heating blanket temperatures for intermediate tires have been increased, the taillight signals have been simplified and the maximum ERS output has been reduced. Formula 1 briefly banned the boost button for overtaking maneuvers in heavy rain.
Several drivers had expressed concerns in advance. Williams driver Carlos Sainz said: “It’s an extremely flat track, the water remains on the surface – and whether that will be safe enough or not – with the boundary walls so close and the visibility we have with these cars – will certainly be a concern.” The Spaniard added: “I hope we can take all the necessary precautions for this. We can put on a good show, a good race. I think all drivers want to ride in the wet – but hopefully with the right system and the right tools to do it safely.”
