Denmark is planning a new motorsport complex near the German border. The 500 million project is intended to meet Formula 1 standards and offer space for 100,000 fans.
Denmark has been known for its motorsport enthusiast scene for decades, but so far there has been one thing missing in particular to increase the hype in the country: a race track that meets international standards. That could change soon: With the “Circuit of Denmark,” an ambitious construction project is being planned that would give the country the chance to host a Formula 1 race for the first time in the coming years.

The plans for the new facility were presented in early May by Henrik Lyngbye Pedersen and his son Mathias Lyngbye Villadsen, who are considered heirs to the Novo Nordisk fortune. A motorsport complex is planned on the site of today’s “Padborg Park” near the German-Danish border, not far from Flensburg. The investment amount is expected to be more than 500 million euros. With a length of 6,006 meters and 18 curves, the future track will be one of the largest in Europe and will accommodate up to 100,000 spectators. The planning office of former Formula 1 driver Alexander Wurz is responsible for the track layout.

The project is still in an early phase. Discussions with property owners are ongoing, approvals are pending. There is no specific timetable for completion, but the initiators expect it to take several years to complete.
The project should be more than just a race track
The planned complex is intended to include much more than just a race track. According to those responsible for the project, additional facilities for motocross and karting, hotels, conference areas as well as offers for traffic safety and tourism are planned. The aim is to create a center for sport and regional development.
Denmark has already produced several drivers who have attracted attention in Formula 1 and other international racing series. Among the most famous are Jan Magnussen and his son Kevin Magnussen, who achieved a pole position and a podium finish in 185 Grand Prix races. Danish talent is also represented in other series such as IndyCar or Formula 2.
Whether and when Formula 1 will actually come to Denmark remains to be seen. However, the conditions for a race on Scandinavian soil could be created for the first time with the “Circuit of Denmark”.
