Lately the hopes for a Formula 1 comeback from Mick Schumacher have dropped to a minimum. The 26-year-old has not yet given up his dream.
Mick Schumacher now told “Sportscar365.com” that he would not say no to any Formula 1 return, but the motorsport “premier class” did not dominate his considerations.
“This year I made myself the main focus of being 100 percent involved in the WEC- without a role as a replacement driver on the side,” emphasized Schumacher, who had participated as a test and replacement driver in the Mercedes factory team until the end of last year.
In 2025, the son of Formula 1 record champion Michael Schumacher is only active for Alpine in the long-distance world championship because he has the opportunity to “look at and be free to look at and be free when there are some”. After all, he was “still too young to only races [pro Jahr] to drive.”
So whether Mick Schumacher looks around for cockpits outside the WEC? “Hopefully a few more races will be added over time,” he kept up: “But it is clear: The main focus is on the WEC. I want to do it well and then look.”
Hope for Formula 1-comeback 2026
At the moment it is “very unclear where this leads in the end”, Schumacher confessed. However, he is not under pressure: “I am currently in the attitude: wait and see what comes and how it develops. I take it every day. Then we continue to see.”
For the former Formula 2 champion, the 2025 season marked the third year in a row without a regular place in Formula 1, after he was used for the Ferrari customer team Haas in 2021 and 2022. In 43 Grands Prix, Schumacher drove twice into the points.
A Formula 1 return for the 2026 season would be conceivable under the new technical regulations with new vehicles: Not all driver’s spaces have yet been awarded. In addition to Formula 1 newcomers Cadillac, Mercedes and Racing Bulls have so far not confirmed any drivers for 2026.
