You rarely see that: Fernando Alonso suddenly has his steering wheel in his hand in Formula 1 in Bahrain.
The Bahrain Grand Prix will take place on Sunday (from 5 p.m. in the T-Online Live ticker). In training on Friday evening there was a curious scene. The two -time world champion Fernando Alonso, who sits in the cockpit for Aston Martin, was involved.
The Spaniard was around 120 km/h when he suddenly held his steering wheel in his hand while steering – without a connection to the handlebar. Alonso then drove straight into the run -out area over the curbs. The vehicle slowed down and came to a standstill. An accident failed to materialize.
Alonso remained calm on the box radio. The Spaniard reported that the steering wheel had to be changed, there was a problem with it. The response from the box crew was short: “We see that too.”
After around 20 minutes, the two -time world champion returned on the route. The McLaren pilots Lando Norris and Oscar Piatri dominated. World champion Max Verstappen was sobered. He landed in seventh place and then said: “I am not really happy, I had some problems with the grip.”
It went better for George Russell in the Mercedes, Charles Leclerc in Ferrari and for the second Mercedes pilot Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar-they all landed in front of the Red Bull star. So Verstappen made it clear: “We were just off the shot, so we still have some work ahead of us.” Red Bull’s motorsport consultant Helmut Marko said optimistically: “Perhaps we will succeed in the golden mix for tomorrow.”
