Ex-Bundesliga professional Rafinha has extended his contract with FC São Paulo by another year until December 2023. The 37-year-old joined São Paulo from Gremio Porto Alegre earlier this year, for whom he played 50 of a possible 77 games. The right-back made a total of 332 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke (2005 to 2010) and Bayern (2011 to 2019), the third most for a Brazilian in the German top flight.

“Rafinha has helped achieve exactly what we expected when we decided to sign him last season with leadership qualities, technical prowess, tactical acumen and great dedication. That’s why we’re happy to have him with us in 2023,” said football director Carlos Belmonte. Rafinha added: “We are confident that we will win titles for our fans.” São Paulo ended the season in Brazil’s Série A in ninth place and missed out on the Copa Sudamericana final against Independiente del Valle (0-2) from Ecuador the next international triumph.
