Former Bundesliga goalkeeper Marwin Hitz is leaving FC Basel. But not immediately, but when the contract ends next summer. The 38-year-old will not extend his expiring contract with the 21-time Swiss champions. This emerged from a conversation between Hitz and sports director Daniel Stucki at the training camp in Marbella. “The club very much regrets this decision, but respects it and is looking forward to a joint, successful second half of the season with extremely strong support between the posts,” the Basel team said in a statement.
Keeper Hitz explained: “Dear fans, this decision was anything but easy because FC Basel has grown incredibly close to my heart as well as my family over the last three years. But after careful consideration and many discussions with the family, I will not be extending my contract with FCB. It was very important to me to communicate my decision early on so that the club can plan with full clarity and possible speculation does not arise at all. My full focus is now on a strong second half of the season so that we can achieve our ambitious goals.”
Hitz has appeared between the posts 153 times for FCB since his move from Dortmund in 2022. Only four games are missing from his record for a club: he once played 157 games for FC Augsburg, followed by 46 games for BVB and 19 for VfL Wolfsburg. It is not yet known what will happen next for the goalkeeper in the summer.
