Relegation-threatened club signs former Bundesliga coach

Pellegrino Matarazzo dares to go abroad. His next task: get Real Sociedad back into shape.
Former Bundesliga coach Pellegrino Matarazzo is supposed to save Spanish first division club Real Sociedad from relegation. Like table 16. La Liga announced after the 1-1 (0-0) game at UD Levante on Saturday that the American-born player signed a contract with the Basques until 2027. Matarazzo’s predecessor Sergio Francisco was fired last weekend.
Matarazzo has already gained valuable experience in Germany. With VfB Stuttgart he achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 2020 and secured relegation twice before being released in October 2022. He was most recently under contract with TSG Hoffenheim. In November 2024, Matarazzo had to vacate his place after one year and nine months.
Matarazzo will make his debut on the Real Sociedad bench on January 4th against Champions League participants Atlético Madrid. It is his third head coaching position and the first outside of Germany.
