Former AZ player Des Kunst sympathizes with FC Volendam’s acquisition: “As if I made this transfer myself”

Former AZ player Des Kunst already knew that FC Volendam would most likely strengthen itself with Luke Le Roux. The South African international played together with Kunst at the Swedish Varberg. “I played football with him for a year and a half and I still speak to him every day.”

“In football you have few friends,” says Des Kunst about the volatility in professional football. “Yet you keep in touch with some players and I can say that I see Luke Le Roux as a friend.”

The transition from Le Roux to FC Volendam is not yet complete, but the current number sixteen of the Eredivisie already published about the agreement yesterday. “I immediately called him after this news and I was so happy for him. It felt like I was making this transfer myself, I empathized so much.” Art itself made the switch to VV Katwijk last winter. With the second divisionist, he won the overall national championship in amateur football last season.

“He also asked me for advice,” says Kunst. “I advised him to take this step, but he was already very enthusiastic himself.” According to the resident from IJmuiden, Le Roux also fits perfectly in the premier league. “In terms of technique and passing, he is very Dutch. During our time at Varberg, he often let me know that he was charmed by Dutch football. That’s why I’m glad he’s getting that chance now.”

Box-to-box player

At the moment, Varberg is firmly at the bottom of the Swedish league. It is therefore quite a big step, since the Swedish league has a lower reputation than the premier league. “I am convinced that he can handle that, especially because he comes into his own in the way he plays football,” says the former AZ player. “In his early days at Varberg he was a defensive midfielder now more of a box-to-box player.”

“He will come to the Netherlands later this week and then we will definitely meet”, an enthusiastic Kunst anticipates. “And I will certainly encourage him later in the stadium of FC Volendam.”
