For sale in Peize for a year already: A farm with a noble history, who wants to live there?

The national monumental building, formerly Huys te Peijse, at 2 Brinkweg in Peize has been for sale for more than a year. Who wants to live in this historic building?

In the middle of the village of Peize is a farm of 121 square meters on a spacious plot of 5000 square meters. Previously, the ‘Huijs te Peijse’ with a forecourt and a bridge stood in the meadow on the Burchtlaantje.

Royal

The farmhouse has a rich history, says architect Jacob Bezema from Peize. In the first half of the 12th century, the bishop of Utrecht donated the house to his brother. Later the house was owned by the noble families Lewe, Ripperda and De Coninck, after whom street names in Peize are also named. The last member of the nobility family died in 1795, says Bezema.

In the same year, the Huys loses its noble status as a result of the Batavian Republic, which means that privileges were abolished. In 1803 the house is auctioned. The owner will be Schulte Jan Willinge. He lives in the house with his wife Roelien Vorenkamp. After his death in 1806 she married carpenter Geert Kemkers. The building has already fallen into disrepair. “You saw that happen a lot in Napoleon’s time,” says Bezema. “Many noble buildings in Drenthe and Groningen have been demolished as a result.”

Recycled farmhouse

The Huys te Peijse was therefore razed to the ground. But the materials of the building were used by the carpenter for the construction of the farm. “On the side and rear facade of the farm you can see the large monastery jokes (medieval bricks, ed.).” Also striking: It is an L-shaped building. „The front house faces the meadow, the house looks back, as it were.” There are no houses around the farm. “It used to be important to have a good overview of what was happening in the village.”

In 2013, the Pezie-Peize Historical Association made a replica of the original manor house. “A life-size skeleton of the house was built from scaffolding poles.” As an example, a painting was used on which the Huys te Peijse stands in the background. In 2000, the association renovated the location with fences and hedges.
