Residents’ Association Hart van Alkmaar is happy with the steps that the municipality is taking. “We had hoped that they had immediately taken this part of the Laat into the renovation,” says Herman van der Zwan. “I also hope that there are clear areas for pedestrians and that those bikes in the street are a thing of the past.”

In addition to refurbishing the street, alderman Peetoom also hopes to be able to welcome new residents in De Laat. There must be 96 apartments above the supermarket in the old V&D building.

New energy in the street

Seventy apartments must also be built in the former Primark. The gigantic building in the middle of Laat has been empty since 2021, but there seems to be a shot in the case. “The final permit still has to be granted, but it looks good,” says Peetoom.

This way, quite a few homes are added together. “We hope that all those extra inhabitants will give new energy to the street,” says Peetoom. “That must also contribute to remedying the vacancy in the street.”
