Switzerland relies on seven professionals from the Bundesliga at the World Cup in Qatar.

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer from Borussia Mönchengladbach, who still has an ankle injury, is also part of the squad announced by national coach Murat Yakin. The coach also nominated Sommer’s teammates Nico Elvedi, Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund, the two Mainzers Edimilson Fernandes and Silvan Widmer as well as Djibril Sow from Eintracht Frankfurt and Augsburg’s Ruben Vargas. There are no Bundesliga players on the list of possible replacements.

“We want to make history together. For our fans and for our beautiful and diverse country,” said Yakin, who is counting on 19 players who played at the last European Championship. There are also numerous former Bundesliga professionals such as Xherdan Shaqiri. The 31-year-old is contesting his sixth major tournament for the Confederates. “We were spoiled for choice in some positions. Many players have put in convincing performances in recent weeks and months,” said Yakin.

The Swiss team flies from Zurich to Doha on November 14 and two days later to Abu Dhabi. The last form check against Ghana is scheduled for November 17th. In the group stage, the Swiss will face Cameroon, Serbia and Brazil.
