Football: VfL Wolfsburg to Paris without goalkeeper Frohms

As of: October 9th, 2023 4:29 p.m

The VfL Wolfsburg footballers will have to make do without goalkeeper Merle Frohms in the qualifying first leg for the group stage of the Champions League at Pariser FC on Tuesday. The 28-year-old suffered a concussion during training. How long it will be out is unclear.

Lisa Schmitz will most likely be in the VfL goal for the game on Tuesday evening (7 p.m.) at the Stade Charlety in Paris. She knows the opponent as she played for Montpellier in the French league from 2019 until this summer. Kiara Beck is also moving up to the VfL squad.

Oberdorf operational again

Frohms thus increases the personnel concerns of VfL coach Tommy Stroot, who has to do without the long-injured Rebecka Blomqvist, Sveindis Jonsdottir and Camilla Küver as well as Tabea Sellner (who is going to be a mother).

Lena Oberdorf was also missing from Friday’s league game against Nuremberg (1-0) due to knee problems. The German international should play again in Paris. Coach Stroot described her absence as purely a precautionary measure.

Schäfer warns about Paris

The team will “go to Paris with a cool head” at the start of the mission to win the Champions League title number three, said national player Chantal Hagel: “We are positively excited. This is an extremely important game. We clearly want to get into the group phase, There is only one thing: win.”

Sports director Marcel Schäfer warned: “Paris FC are tough guys. You can see that from the fact that they eliminated WFC Arsenal on the way to this round.” The Londoners were VfL’s semi-final opponents last season.
